Day 58

Today was the last day of the Back to School Promotion in Immunizations. Kara and I prepped in her CHEN office for the party popcorn. We used an air popper for the kernels and used Pam spray oil and spices for flavor. It didn’t take long for the popcorn to pop. I sprayed it with oil and we used chili powder, cumin, and garlic powder. We were able to serve it to thirty-two clients throughout the health department. We explained to them the healthy way of making popcorn and other adjustments if they don’t have an air popper for popcorn kernels.  After that I continued to work on my internship paper for the rest of the day.

Day 57

In the morning, I worked on my final paper for a while until I decided to have the Back to School Promotion for forty minutes in the hall. I had about fifteen kids within that time that came up to the table to spin the wheel, so I decided to introduce and review 5-2-1-0 with them and which of their favorite thing was to do from 5-2-1-0. It went well.
Right after I finished the promotion, I prepped for Ebonwood, as today was the last day and I was doing it alone. I decided to use the Physical Activity Chair Bingo for the middle and older children and have a ‘5’ themed coloring contest with the youngest group. The outreach with Ebonwood was extended due to set up and other guest speakers with other groups. I stayed with the middle group the longest for the activity. They were thrilled. I went back to the health department to prep for National Night Out with Kara and Skye. The purpose for the event is to raise awareness about drug and crime rates, and support local organizations to prevent crimes. We talked about giving out 5-2-1-0 frisbees, multiple colored sunglasses, and inflatable footballs. I wasn’t aware the event was going to be as big as it was. There seemed like less sponsors there, but the crowds made up for it. It was a quick three hours that we were there. I was able to even do some personal networking as a health educator, while informing the public about services offered, and 5-2-1-0 for parents and potential partners for CHEN.

Day 56

Today was the first day of the Back to School Promotion. Stephanie and I decided to promote physical activity using the 5-2-1-0 spin wheel. We gave the kids strawberry orange water as a reward for participating. We also handed out informational tools, such as the Wacky Water Ideas for Kids and Physical Activity Pyramid sheets. Some of the children weren’t aware about exercises such as leg lifts, arm circles, leg lunges, and squats. We were able to teach them in groups. Corey wanted us to be there for about twenty minutes, but we ended up stay there for about an hour. It got packed and very active as we drew attention in the hall. It was a good first day.

I started working on my final paper for my internship and worked on inventory the rest of the day.

Day 54

In the morning, I touched up on the brochure one last time. I also finished the revisions for the presentation for the HI Network for Florida Healthy Babies and turned it in for revisions for Corey and Patrick. This will be sent to Marie, who is one of the Public Health Communications Manager. I was nervous about it from the beginning, but I knew which credible sources to use, how to word the content appropriately for my target audience, and did everything in terms of meeting the Department of Health’s standards.

Tanisha and I started prepping for the 5-2-1-0 Olympics with Ebonwood kids about two hours early. We decided to make stations for each of the numbers and split the kids up into two teams. They filed in two separate lines, as the leaders assisted. Some kids were new and needed a bit of assistance. We used the 5 to ask questions to the kids about 5 fruits and vegetables a day, such as, ‘What is a fruit or vegetable in a pie?’ and ‘What is a fruit that grows on a tree?’ The 2 was for them to state or mimic an activity they would do instead of screen time. The 1 was for the 5-2-1-0 physical activity spinning wheel, and the 0 was to state a sugary drink. If anyone got them incorrect, they were to be sent to me to use the physical activity dice, but still be able to move onto the next round. The bonus round got animated. I used the physical activity for Tic-Tac-Toe from the Vickery Center to determine the winner for Olympics.

Day 53

CHEN started the morning with a small meeting about the Back to School Promotion that Corey assigned me to plan. It actually will be a 5-day, twenty or thirty minute event near WIC to promote aspects of 5-2-1-0 and MyPlate. I would be attending three days only. I wanted to focus on physical activity and proper hydration for most days. Two of the days would focus on healthy nutrition. Skye and Kara decided they’d use the air fryer and do popcorn on one day, along with promoting a few brochures about eating well when you don’t have time, eating smart when you go out to eat, and 100 calorie snacks. The second day they promote healthy nutrition, they agreed on doing a ‘fruit sushi’ that consists of whole grain tortilla with low-fat strawberry cream cheese and strawberries along with the same materials to promote. Stephanie, Corey, and I would take three days to do proper hydration and use a few tear away sheets about the physical activity geared towards children, the 1 and 0 brochures from 5-2-1-0 and use the physical activity wheel. We decided that doing a strawberry orange water to promote a different way to drink water might be successful. Tanisha and I planned for Ebonwood by talking about how we would do the 5-2-1-0 Olympics for the kids. The presentation is almost finished and I feel a bit more confident in using the Flesch-Kincaid for revisions.

Day 45

Corey and I had much to discuss about my assigned tasks and projects until the end of my internship. We discussed future events, like the Visitor’s Centers, Day of Play preparation, and Back to School promotion. Although I will not be interning for Day of Play, I would be assisting in setting up materials to prepare for it, as it is one of the biggest events that the health department is involved in. The Back to School promotion would be a three-day, twenty-minute promotion for immunization clients. I pitched ideas about healthy snacks and increasing water intake for those days. Kara and Skye would be assisting in the demos for healthy snacks, as we also focus on 5-2-1-0, and the benefits of drinking water versus sugary drinks. I also decided to take on the Healthy Babies module for a presentation, flyer, and brochure for a low literate target audience. And the last would be Summer Safety presentation for community partners. Today, I focused on an action plan and researching ideas for the Back to School promotion.
