Day 60: Last Day

We started off the morning with a meeting with everyone in CHEN. We talked about some positive changes, including those involving websites. The Florida Department of Health in Escambia officially has a Twitter account and the communications department is also working on the Escambia Health website. We talked about the current hydration challenge and working the 5-2-1-0 Day of Play and Seafood Fun. Healthiest Weight has a few new prioritized changes including birthing/breastfeeding facilities, worksite wellness, childcare centers, and health care focuses. This year, the healthy equity focus would be on cardiovascular disease and diabetes, with partnering communities in health care and faith-based organizations. There is also a new intervention for toxic stress among children that would need to be accomplished. It was stated that the CHA-CHIP goals needed to have slight revisions to fit other categories and have the Quality Improvement project for training on health equity.

I finished my internship paper this afternoon and had several new insights of my internship that tied into the areas of responsibility as a health education intern. I was not aware that so many sub-competencies made up an entire area, but that the health department does teach and implement many ways of promoting health education internal and external of the organization. It was a hard, long, and rewarding experience.

Day 59

I started continuing to work on my internship paper in the morning until the CHEN meeting. We discussed many things, like worksite wellness, Diabetes Prevention Program, the new umbrella for Healthy Escambia, and Day of Play. I decided to continue as a volunteer for that day, unless otherwise noted. There would be more positive and flowing changes to Healthy Escambia to better meet the needs of the community members. Kara decided to do a six-week focus on healthy lifestyle changes open to everyone in the community so she wouldn’t just do DPP classes. She wanted to focus it on topics that were relevant to everyone in the community, such as stress management, reading nutrition labels, physical activity, and a few others. We jotted down ideas for her to start working on. I had to reword and add several things to my internship paper to focus it more on the Areas for development of competencies.

Day 54

In the morning, I touched up on the brochure one last time. I also finished the revisions for the presentation for the HI Network for Florida Healthy Babies and turned it in for revisions for Corey and Patrick. This will be sent to Marie, who is one of the Public Health Communications Manager. I was nervous about it from the beginning, but I knew which credible sources to use, how to word the content appropriately for my target audience, and did everything in terms of meeting the Department of Health’s standards.

Tanisha and I started prepping for the 5-2-1-0 Olympics with Ebonwood kids about two hours early. We decided to make stations for each of the numbers and split the kids up into two teams. They filed in two separate lines, as the leaders assisted. Some kids were new and needed a bit of assistance. We used the 5 to ask questions to the kids about 5 fruits and vegetables a day, such as, ‘What is a fruit or vegetable in a pie?’ and ‘What is a fruit that grows on a tree?’ The 2 was for them to state or mimic an activity they would do instead of screen time. The 1 was for the 5-2-1-0 physical activity spinning wheel, and the 0 was to state a sugary drink. If anyone got them incorrect, they were to be sent to me to use the physical activity dice, but still be able to move onto the next round. The bonus round got animated. I used the physical activity for Tic-Tac-Toe from the Vickery Center to determine the winner for Olympics.

Day 53

CHEN started the morning with a small meeting about the Back to School Promotion that Corey assigned me to plan. It actually will be a 5-day, twenty or thirty minute event near WIC to promote aspects of 5-2-1-0 and MyPlate. I would be attending three days only. I wanted to focus on physical activity and proper hydration for most days. Two of the days would focus on healthy nutrition. Skye and Kara decided they’d use the air fryer and do popcorn on one day, along with promoting a few brochures about eating well when you don’t have time, eating smart when you go out to eat, and 100 calorie snacks. The second day they promote healthy nutrition, they agreed on doing a ‘fruit sushi’ that consists of whole grain tortilla with low-fat strawberry cream cheese and strawberries along with the same materials to promote. Stephanie, Corey, and I would take three days to do proper hydration and use a few tear away sheets about the physical activity geared towards children, the 1 and 0 brochures from 5-2-1-0 and use the physical activity wheel. We decided that doing a strawberry orange water to promote a different way to drink water might be successful. Tanisha and I planned for Ebonwood by talking about how we would do the 5-2-1-0 Olympics for the kids. The presentation is almost finished and I feel a bit more confident in using the Flesch-Kincaid for revisions.

Day 52

The most challenging thing I feel like I’ve had to do for my internship was use Flesch-Kincaid to revise my presentation. I actually had to double check the Florida Department of Health’s guidelines and the information that the document states about consumer information from us is that it has to be between a fourth to sixth grade level. I decided to make comments into my presentation as guidelines to see the Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level. It helped a lot so that I wouldn’t have to keep going back into my slides and rewording what didn’t to be reworded. Corey, Skye, Tanisha, Stephanie, and I went to the Vickery Center to promote 5-2-1-0 to the kids that were attending summer camp. I joined Stephanie and Skye’s group and we had 7-10 year old children. We briefly introduced ourselves and went over 5-2-1-0 and asked the kids questions regarding 5-2-1-0 and how to use and incorporate it to every day life and why it is important. We used hula hoops, cones, and bean bags to incorporate the physical activity planned. It was Tic-Tac-Toe. The kids loved it and we also had fun.

Day 51

I continued to work on the revisions for the Florida Healthy Babies presentation, along with the brochure, and the short messages. Tanisha and I worked on making the kids musical instruments made out of household items. We used construction paper, toilet paper rolls, and beans, rice, and spaghetti noodles to put into the toilet paper rolls. The kids loved it so much that we spent about twenty minutes over our normal time to spend more time with them. They also made a ‘song’ to dance to as well. We explained that this would bring the focus for two hours or less of screen time. The older kids’ focus today was physical activity. We only had about six kids today, but we incorporated resistance bands of different strengths. Since the presentation for HI Network had the most information, I made that a priority to continue after I took a break on working on the brochure and touched up the short messages after Ebonwood.

Day 50

I started the morning with driving to Perdido Key Visitor’s Center with Skye. We informed tourists and visitors about Summer Safety and that lasted until about 1 o’clock. After that, I got back to CHEN and started making revisions on last week’s Healthy Babies brochure and short messages. Some of the links on the short messages were sources and not information that the viewers would be able to interpret for more information. I was able to change two of them to provide some of the WIC’s services and another one to explain what premature birth is. I had to change some of the brochure’s content because it focused too much on one specific topic, rather than the entire Healthy Babies elements that make up the module. That sums up my Monday’s work.

Day 49

The Healthy Babies Module was much information that I tried my best to cover in a short amount of time. I was able to have contents for all slides of the presentation, but not quite the notes in the required format. I was able to have short messages about infant mortality that could be shared via Twitter or Facebook per CHEN’s guidelines. Tanisha and I reviewed the content of the short messages. She taught me how to use Bitly as a source for a shortened version of the sources of the website links I used. I am not familiar with Twitter at all, but I also learned that Twitter has a 140-character guideline for their posts, including spaces and punctuation. This was actually what I finished the quickest, even though I had to update my sources and use the Bitly generator and Twitter word count. I guess being up to date with social media is my next goal as a health educator. I was able to start on the brochure. Targeting benefits of breastfeeding, quitting tobacco, prenatal and postnatal care, and local resources were tied into the presentation and brochure. These were all my drafts, as I attempted to put as much information into these materials for the Faith-Based Network.

Day 47

Much research was conducted today. I used many sources like MyPlate, Women’s Health, CDC, HealthyPeople 2020, Florida Department of Health, and others. Attempting to make an outline as I make sense of the main points for low health literate target audiences is much more challenging than I thought. Main points such as breastfeeding, health equity, and infant mortality are topics I believed I’d be able to simplify in context in a short amount of time, but unfortunately, I am not quite efficient. I tried to use the Flesch-Kincaid proofreading tool on Word for about half an hour to test it out and understand before I completely  finish my draft of the PowerPoint. Gathering as much resources as possible on a time crunch was my main focus as I continued to make sense of the content and outline in my own words. I figured I would focus on rewording to the standards of the Flesch-Kincaid would be a later goal prior to submitting my presentation.

Day 46

I was assigned a Healthy Babies Module for the Faith-Based Health Information (HI) Network. This is the last module that is due for the fiscal year. It will be about infant mortality among black women. The module contains a PowerPoint presentation, flyer, brochure, and short messages. I met up with one of the breastfeeding coordinators in WIC and she gave me great resources and insights for nutrition portion. She also gave me a handful of information about breastfeeding and the expectations, breastfeeding after coming back from maternity leave, and benefits of it for mothers and babies. It gave me the idea to start on the MyPlate portion of the presentation. I decided to use MyPlate nutrition guidelines for the general population of adults, but also specify pregnant women as well. MyPlate had more information on it than I thought. I even included two slides for components on limiting added sugars, and healthy oils. It seems like much information in a module to be done in a week because the research portion is my main focus. I’m sure I will come up with a flowing outline soon. CHEN also went over the Back to School Promotion that is a five day ‘outreach’ at the health department that I would be in charge of. I decided to focus two days on nutrition, so food demos would be the focus those days. And two days of hydration, along with at least one day of physical activity, but tying in proper hydration as well.
